A knob or lever lock alone uses a spring latch that can be slipped or forced. A deadbolt adds a solid bolt that only moves when you turn the key or thumbturn, making the door much harder to open by force.
What are deadbolt locks?
A deadbolt is a separate lock with a bolt that extends into the door frame. Because it is not spring-loaded, it cannot be pushed back with a card or tool.
Single or double cylinder?
Single cylinder deadbolts have a key outside and a thumbturn inside. Double cylinder models need a key on both sides, which helps on doors with glass panels but can slow escape in a fire. Check local fire and building rules before choosing one.
Look at the grade
Residential locks are often rated to ANSI/BHMA grades. Grade 1 is the most durable; Grade 2 is common for good residential use; Grade 3 is basic.
Installation matters as much as the lock
- The bolt should extend at least one inch
- Use a reinforced strike plate
- Fix the strike with long screws into the wall stud
- Make sure the door is aligned so the bolt throws smoothly
